Tax Incentives for HVAC Businesses: An Overlooked Opportunity

Your business may already qualify for federal tax incentives tied to work you've completed — and some opportunities may be worth investigating before they're missed.

Work already performed may deserve a closer look.

The Overlooked Opportunity

Many HVAC contractors already qualify for federal tax incentives they don't know exist.

This is not only a year-end filing conversation. Design-build work, commercial retrofits, engineering, energy modeling, and custom technical work already completed may deserve review.

If the business has been solving building-system problems — not only swapping equipment — that activity is the place to start.

This isn't just about filing taxes at tax time. Some of the work we've already done may deserve review.

What Changed in 2026

Closed to New Projects — But Your 2026 Work May Still Be Worth Reviewing

Key date June 30, 2026
§ 179D Review past / current work

Energy Efficient Commercial Buildings Deduction

Section 179D is a deduction, not a credit. It can apply to qualifying HVAC, lighting, and building-envelope improvements.

It is relevant to designers, engineers, and contractors who create the technical specifications. It does not apply simply to businesses that install, repair, or maintain equipment.

Projects meeting the specified timing and cost conditions may still warrant review — even where the program is closed to new projects.

§ 45L Deadline-bound

New Energy Efficient Home Credit

Section 45L applied to builders of energy-efficient homes.

The program no longer applies to homes acquired, sold, or leased after June 30, 2026.

Homes sold or leased on or before that date may still qualify.

§ 25C / 25D Expired

Residential energy credits — expired

These customer-facing residential credits for insulation, windows, doors, HVAC equipment, and solar expired December 31, 2025.

They are no longer available. This still matters operationally: customers may continue to ask HVAC businesses about these programs.

Available Year-Round

Not Time-Limited: Opportunities Worth Looking At Year-Round

Even if one program doesn't fit, there may be other opportunities worth investigating.

Did you know?

R&D Tax Credit — Section 41

This credit can apply to genuine technical or engineering work. Routine installations do not automatically qualify. Design-build work may warrant a closer look.

  • Custom system design
  • Energy modeling
  • New installation methods
  • Testing
  • Experimentation

Routine installations are not the test. The question is whether the shop performed genuine technical or engineering work — including design-build — that may meet the credit's requirements.

Section 179 / Bonus depreciation

Accelerated write-offs may be available for trucks, tools, diagnostic equipment, and shop equipment. Current bonus-depreciation percentages should be confirmed with the business's tax preparer.

Work Opportunity Tax Credit

This credit may apply to hiring from certain groups, including veterans and long-term unemployed workers.

Small Business Health Care Tax Credit

This credit may be relevant to small employers offering employee health coverage.

State & utility incentives

These vary by state and utility provider and should be evaluated separately from the federal programs above.

Scope of Review

What HVAC work should we look at?

These types of work should trigger a conversation. They do not automatically qualify — they indicate activity that may deserve documentation and review.

How the Review Works

A documented progression — from shop floor to your CPA.

REV 01

Initial review

We walk through your shop's day-to-day work — design specs, installs, retrofits, custom system work — and flag activities that may qualify.

REV 02

Documentation

Help organize the wage, project, and specification records needed to support a claim.

REV 03

Credit estimate

Put together a realistic estimate of the potential credit or deduction so you can decide if it's worth pursuing.

REV 04

Coordination with your CPA

Hand off the documentation and estimate to your tax preparer, who incorporates it into your actual filing.

It's Bigger Than One Credit

These programs are only some of the incentives available to HVAC businesses.

If these tax programs aren't the right fit, Affiliated Advisors may still be able to help with funding and working capital.

Incentives

  • Unused credits from prior tax years
  • Industry-specific incentives
  • State incentives
  • Local incentives

When capital is needed

  • Funding and working capital
  • Term loans
  • SBA loans

How Affiliated Advisors Works

We identify and document. Your CPA files.

Affiliated Advisors identifies and documents qualifying tax-credit opportunities and works alongside the business's existing CPA or tax preparer. The role is to complement that relationship, not replace it.

R&D Tax Credit Section 179D Section 45L

What we do not do

Affiliated Advisors does not prepare or file tax returns. Documentation and estimates are provided to the existing tax preparer for the actual filing.

How We're Compensated

There is no cost to determine what you may qualify for.

If the business chooses to move forward, Affiliated Advisors is paid a small percentage of the savings. The percentage depends on the specific credits and incentives pursued.

Affiliated Advisors is only paid once the business actually receives the government funds.

No recovery, no fee.
